Do you know one of the things that makes me really angry? That I have to tell my students how to behave if there is a school shooting. That I have to tell them we “shelter in place.” We turn off the lights. We hide our bags. We turn off our cell phones so they don’t light up and they don’t make any noise. And that I can’t lock the door, because the door to our classroom doesn’t lock.

When will we develop a saner response to this problem? I’m afraid it’s like a post I read on Facebook. The Sandy Hook shootings? That was the moment everyone realized these shootings won’t make a difference. If a lot of little children get shot and the conversation veers between “It’s a hoax!” and “Not our guns!” nothing is going to make a dent.
